Selecting the Correct Cover For Your Needs
Car covers come in all shapes, sizes and materials-just like the vehicles they protect, but just as you wouldn't race out and buy the first new car that you see, neither should you purchase a car cover without first knowing the ins and the outs of what's available. Remember, what seems like a minor investment now might save you thousands of dollars in resale value or paint repair in a few years.
Car covers offer an effective defense against the obvious factors that drain the life out of your vehicle's finish; sun, rain and snow- plus all of the contaminants that are airborne or in precipitation. Car covers also protect from falling acorns, tree sap, flying gravel, even the neighbors children, plus any number of other potentially damaging elements. Cars that are covered require less frequent washing and waxing and, at the very least, a cover will keep the temperature inside your vehicle dramatically lower in the summer months, prolonging the life of its interior in the process.
You might be surprised but, the very finest car covers are not waterproof! While a completely water proof car cover sounds like a good idea, in truth it can be more damaging than no protection at all. A waterproof cover will not allow moisture caught under it to escape, trapped, the contaminants eventually harden onto the vehicle's paint, sometimes etching and marking the finish irreversibly. Beware of cheap "waterproof" covers!
There are two major considerations that must be made when shopping for a car cover. First, what level of protection do you need? Understandably, the owner who garages his classic Corvette and is wishing only to keep the dust off of its finish is looking for an entirely different product than an individual whose daily driver is subjected alternately to heavy winter snows and the baking summer sun. Secondly, you must consider how often you will be using this cover, once a week? Twice? How about three times a day? A bulky, ill-fitting car cover can be so troublesome, frustrating and unattractive that you cease to use it after a few weeks, leaving your car exposed and your wallet a bit lighter.
Luckily, our car covers available fit nearly every demand-from high use, heavy protection, to lightweight or indoor. We carry five different varieties, each designed for a specific need and each available in a custom fit for nearly any vehicle ever made! From the three layered Noah, capable of withstanding the natures harshest conditions, while remaining remarkably lightweight, to our Sunbrella or Dustop, the ultimate in sun or dust protection. There are also the Weathershield and the Evolution, a four layer multi-purpose cover that allows you to "garage" your vehicle anywhere you take it. Do yourself, and your car, a favor, pick a cover that's right for your needs and order today!

CarCoverUSA.com The Covercraft product line. In 1965, Covercraft was opened for business by Bob Lichtmann in Southern California’s San Fernando Valley. At that time, it was just a 2-man operation, manufacturing custom-patterned car covers for street rods, the import sports car market and aftermarket automotive parts suppliers. During these first 40 years, Covercraft has grown to a team of over 400 employees and expanded into three manufacturing locations, with headquarters in historic Pauls Valley, 60 miles south of Oklahoma City. In four decades, the company has amassed a library of over 55,000 cover patterns and continues to add new applications daily. Covercraft pioneered the market for custom fit vehicle covers and over the years has added programs for a wide variety of products for exterior and interior protection - seat protectors, front end masks, tonneau covers, window heat shields and pet travel items. “Covercraftsmanship” has resulted in the company being certified to both TS16949:2002, a worldwide quality system standard, and ISO 14001, an environmental quality program. Still family-owned, Covercraft has always maintained the highest standards, utilized the finest materials and remained on the cutting edge of manufacturing technology.....but it’s our people who assure we put “Covercraftsmanship” in everything we build!

CoverkingCarCovers.com sells the complete Coverking product line. Coverking was founded in 1986. Since then, Coverking purchased various automotive companies, some of which dated back to 1974. Quality, Technology, and Service lead to our stellar Customer Satisfaction, are the basis of all product lines. Coverking was founded in Southern California by an Industrial and Electrical Engineer who worked in Southern California's Aerospace Defense industry. The experience and knowledge acquired over decades of work on the most sophisticated defense weapons systems was applied to the relatively backward industry of cut-and-sew custom automotive accessories. Advanced CAD/CAM systems which were designed for aerospace use were purchased for making Custom Dash Covers. Overkill, perhaps, but it brought the Dash Cover market (which was content with production times of 30 days) quite a jump in business when Coverking began supplying a custom, one-off product in 1 day. The accuracy and precision of the CAD and CAM systems lead to previously unattainable levels of pattern quality, and the automation created efficiencies which allowed Coverking to produce better fitting product, in a fraction of the time, for less money that the competitors of the day. This same recipe was later applied to Custom Floor Mats, Custom Car Covers, Custom Seat Covers and Custom Sunshields. With each of these product lines, Coverking gained market share and raised the bar for the automotive aftermarket. Coverking continues to expand into markets where quality and efficiency are rewarded, while maintaining it's main manufacturing base in California, and it's commitment to our employees, suppliers and customers. Coverking pioneered ISO Quality Standards in the Automotive Soft goods Accessory market. Coverking was the first Automotive Soft goods Aftermarket manufacturer to gain ISO Quality Certification. After Coverking set the bar by gaining the strict ISO:9001 certification, other manufacturers were forced to improve their quality systems. Coverking continues it's lead, having attained QS:9000 and TS16949 certifications. What is the TS16949 Quality System? ISO/TS 16949:2002 is an International Standards Organization Technical Specification, which aligns existing American (QS-9000), German (VDA6.1), French (EAQF) and Italian (AVSQ) quality systems standards, with the aim of eliminating the need for multiple certifications to satisfy multiple customer requirements. Together with ISO 9001:2000, ISO/TS 16949:2002 specifies the quality system requirements for the design/development, production, installation and servicing of products. In addition, there are customer specific requirements that are required by individual subscribing vehicle manufacturers. Why produce such a high level of quality for products such as seat covers, car covers and dash covers? To some, the expense, time and effort spent attaining these quality standards seems overkill for the products manufactured. Coverking is Passionate about products - Purchasing a Coverking product is that it will most likely fit better, be made of superior materials, and cost less in a year's time. Coverking's passion flows from the top down. Upper management sets the tone for our level of quality, efficiency and customer satisfaction. Car covers can be a misunderstood lot. There are those car enthusiasts who spend thousands on creating their dream car, devote countless hours researching and learning about their beloved autos, and then spend less than five minutes picking out the very product that can be most vital to its protection. We see it all the time: a pristine car trapped underneath a "shower cap" that a painter wouldn't use to cover a floor. When asked why one would even think of using such an unworthy roll of cloth over their car, the answer is invariably, "Eh, a car cover is a car cover, right?" Wrong.

Technology and chemistry have caught up with the car cover, making today's covers marvels of protection. The key is not so much choosing one particular brand over another, but taking the time to consider exactly what it is you want from a car cover. That may sound strange, considering the "a cover is a cover" mentality, but modern covers offer a variety of features and options tailored to the needs of you and your car. To investigate this, we spoke with Bruce Williamson, Director of Sales & Marketing, Nonwoven Fabrics, Kimberly-Clark Corporation, makers of BLOCK-IT(R) car cover fabrics, to learn about what car owners need to keep in mind when searching for the perfect cover.

Protection from What?

Ask a 100 car enthusiasts what they want a car cover for and you could very well get a 100 different answers, but the common thread will be protection.

"Car owners," Williamson begins, "are mainly concerned about protecting their investments, but for a variety of reasons. They may want protection from tree sap, rain, snow, sleet, or sun. Or if they're close to the ocean, salt. But protecting the investment is almost always the main concern."

Even big rear wings aren't a problem for custom made car covers.
High quality outdoor car covers are specifically designed do this with UV protection and waterproof, breathable fabrics to guard against the elements. Breathability and UV chemistry are paramount to the lasting protection of an outdoor cover. Without breathable fabrics moisture can become trapped under a car cover and ultimately damage your car's paint, while UV protection blocks the sun's harmful ultra-violet rays to prevent fading. Just how important UV protection is can be appreciated by learning that UV chemistry is generally one of the most expensive parts a manufacture puts into their covers. For example, Kimberly-Clark puts the same UV chemistry in clear coat paints as they do in their car cover fabrics.

But what about the people that only park their precious cars in a garage? Do they need all that breathability and UV chemistry? Few car lovers are aware of many indoor covers that don't feature the same element protection of outdoor covers but are perfect in for them in two other ways.

"When we hear from folks that park their cars inside," Williamson says, "they mainly have two concerns: dust and objects falling against the car."

Most people do not have a garage as clean and tidy as top Nextel Cup teams, so there are bound to be rakes, shovels, bicycles, pets, or a hundred other objects just waiting to topple over and scar a vehicle's finish.

"For that reason, we encourage people to get a thick four- or five-layer cover to protect against items falling in their garages," says Williamson.

Protection from the elements and damage are certainly the most common reasons why people buy car covers, but there are more hazards to consider such as protection against theft.

"A car cover, obviously, works to protect the outside of your car," Williamson says. "What is seldom thought of, however, is that they also serve to protect the inside of your car as well."

How? The old cliche works here: Out of sight, out of mind. Sure, an anti-theft device such a car alarm or steering wheel lock work well as deterrents, but what they don't do is conceal your car and its interior. Potential thieves rarely go for what they can't see and besides a garage a car cover is the next best thing in cloaking your car from prying eyes and crowbars.

"Typically thieves will go for the path of least resistance," Williamson relates. "When they see a car cover they have no idea what is underneath and usually don't want to hassle with it."

What Do YOU Want in a Car Cover?

Car covers do more than protect against damage as a concealed car is less likely to invite potential thieves as well.
The first thing you need to ask yourself before buying a car cover is what are you trying to protect your car from? Is it from the elements, or from dust, from dings and dents, or from theft, or maybe even a combination of all of these? Whatever your reasons there is a car cover to suit your needs, but there are a few basics to keep in mind.

"We encourage people to look for the highest warranty that they can find in cover," Williamson explains. "They should look for, not only the water resistance of a cover, but also the breathability. Often times you'll get water trapped underneath the cover. If there is not any breathability you'll get condensation and then the car cover will rot and may affect the paint. What we at Kimberly-Clark feel we have is the best balance of both properties: waterproofing, breathability, UV durability and softness."

Cheap car covers tend to have very little UV protection, if any at all, so the rule "you get what you pay for" applies here.

"The more expensive car covers have more UV protection, therefore more sun protection, and better protection over a longer period of time," says Williamson.

Enthusiasts searching for added protection from damage should look for car covers with four or five layers that can be used as extra padding. The extra layers will go a long way toward protecting against errant objects and people trying to squeeze by your car in a tight garage.

This one's important: get a custom made cover. Sure they cost a little more, but a custom made cover offers the best fit for your car, which will save you time and stress when putting the cover on, and gives the added benefit of being even tougher against the elements.

"For people that are really concerned about protecting their investment," Williamson says, "we encourage them to buy custom covers. They fit like a glove and you don't have to worry about them blowing away in strong winds."

Easy On, Easy Off

If the front of your cover isn't already clearly designated, like this one, place a mark of some sort on the front to help you line up the cover on your car.
There is a misconception floating about that car covers are difficult to put on and take off - simply put, this is a fallacy. On average, it takes people about 45 seconds to put on or take off a car cover. That is not a lot of time to give your ride added protection. Just use the tips below and you'll be a pro at handling your cover.

Cover a clean vehicle only. Dust, dirt, and grit between a cover and the finish can cause scratches, swirls, abrasion and dullness. If you have a breathable cover, your car does not have to be totally dry before you put on the cover.

Put on a clean cover. Bringing dirt to a clean car via the cover only increases the odds for damage. Spot cleaning when necessary will minimize this risk.

Take off a clean cover. If your cover has collected dirt, leaves, etc, clean it off before you remove it from your car.
Tips on cleaning a cover are below. Keep your cover off the ground. If your cover should touch the ground, shake it out and make sure it is free of dirt and grit. Unfold going on, fold up going off. Never drag or slide your cover - sideways motion could cause particles of grit to scratch the surface of your car.
On average, a person can put on a cover in about 45 seconds.

Putting the Cover On
1.
Mark the front of the cover with the word "front" to help you get it positioned correctly on the car.
2.
If your vehicle has an outside radio antenna that doesn't unscrew or retract flush with the vehicle body, you will have to provide an opening in the cover. Place the cover over the antenna before moving to the next step.
3.
If your cover has side-mirror pockets, position the cover over the mirrors.
4.
Stretch the ends of the cover over the front and rear bumpers.

Caution: If the car has just been driven, be careful not to allow the cover to come in contact with hot exhaust pipes.

Tip: Some vehicles may have sharp bumpers, hood ornaments or moldings. You can minimize abrasion and the possibility of tearing the cover by reinforcing the inside of the cover and taking extra care when installing and removing the cover.

Removing the Cover
1.
Release both ends of the cover from under the bumpers.
2.
Fold both sides of the cover onto the top of the vehicle into a pile approximately 2 feet (60cm) wide.
3.
Start at the front of the vehicle and fold the cover in 3 foot (1 meter) folds from the front to the back

The custom car cover for this Mustang provides a nice snug fit despite all the body add-ons like a front spoiler and rear wing.
. Taking Care of Your Cover
You did the right thing and purchased a quality car cover and slipped it on your car successfully - but your not really done. Proper care of a car cover is simple but vital to prolonging the protective qualities that you purchased the cover for in the first place.

Cleaning your cover is easy as they are washable in large commercial washing machine (preferably one without an agitator), but DO NOT put a cover in the dryer. This cannot be stressed enough, as Williamson states.

"You can put a car cover in the washing machine but it can't go in the dryer. Good quality car covers are made of fairly versatile fabrics as long as you don't put them in the dryer. Other than that they are pretty much a no-brainer product. We encourage people to use water a light detergent like Fantastik(R) All Purpose Cleaner because many of the harsh detergents, such as the type you use for your clothes, can get trapped into the cover and make it porous, thus reducing the cover's protective qualities."

You can hand clean small areas with a brush, but for a washing machine use two cups of cleaner. Rinse thoroughly making sure all the cleaner is washed away, then just air dry. Light amounts of dust can be hosed off while the cover is on the vehicle.

If there isn't time to air dry a cover, is it safe to simply roll the cover up and plop it in a trunk? Williamson says yes, but make sure the cover is resistant to mold and mildew - even another reason to get a quality cover.

Covercraft Sun ShadesCovercraft Seat SaversCovercraft Car Bra
There is a high quality car cover out there for virtually any car of any size or body style.

"All of Kimberly-Clark's fabrics are mold and mildew resistant so they won't support bacterial growth. The cover may be wet when you pull it out the next time, but if the cover is in your trunk for a period of time, the moisture will just evaporate away. The polymer technology will not melt. Well, our fabrics melt at more than 200 degrees Fahrenheit, but you don't see temperatures above that, so the cover is safe to leave in your trunk."

Here lies the reason not to put your cover in a clothes dryer where temperatures exceed 200 degrees Fahrenheit.
The trunk of your car is fine, the dryer is not.

When storing your cover you always want to have the outside of the cover, well, on the outside, or in other words, exposed when storing. This is to prevent harmful particles from getting on the inside of the car where they may be dragged across your car's paint the next time you use the cover.

Much like a new car's resale value begins to drop the second you drive it off a lot, a car cover's protective chemistry begins to break down almost immediately when it is exposed to the sun, but better the cover catches the brunt of the sun, then your car's paint.

"There is a chemistry that's put into the car cover that basically decelerates or prevents the degradation of the car cover fabric," Williamson says. "So, the way we explain it is, if you didn't have your car cover on, the sun would be degrading your clear coat paint."

Depending on use, a car cover can last from six to ten years.
Much like a paint job, a variety of factors such as frequency of use, exposure and even the UV chemistry and how much a manufacture puts into a cover, determines how long the protection of car cover will last. There are, however, some guidelines Williamson can offer.

"Typically, for our customers who are using their covers a few times week, they can expect the cover to last about 10 years. In very harsh, sunny climates a good car cover will still last about six to eight years."

Now You Know...

The bottomline on car covers is this: if you love on your car, spend the extra money for a quality car cover. Why spend thousands on a paint job, or even more on a new car, and then turn around a buy a cheap "shower cap" cover to save 50 bucks? Cheap car covers do little more than simply cover your car. They offer minimal protection from dents and dings, the suns rays and other harmful elements, and may not even be there after a windy night outside. Even worse, they can actually trap paint-damaging moisture underneath the cover, which can be more harmful than having no cover at all. You spend a lot on your car, so give it the protection you would want by going the extra mile and plunking down the dough for a good cover.

Kimberly-Clark: Car Covers Part of 'Layered Approach' To Deterring Auto Theft in High-Crime Areas
ROSWELL, Ga., June 10 -- The National Insurance Crime Bureau ( NICB ) today announced the Top 10 Auto Theft Areas in the United States. The Top 10 Auto Theft Areas include Phoenix; Miami; Fresno, Calif.; Sacramento, Calif.; Modesto, Calif.; Oakland, Calif.; Stockton-Lodi, Calif.; Seattle; Las Vegas; and, Tacoma, Wash. Cars in or near ports and Canadian and Mexican borders are among those most likely to be stolen. Although that news may sound grim, fortunately, car owners can use a simple tool to ward off would-be thieves and vandals: a car cover.
"Car covers are one of the first and most obvious deterrents thieves notice," says Bruce Williamson, Director of Sales and Marketing, Kimberly-Clark Non woven Fabrics. "Car covers help keep a vehicle and its interior out of sight. The average thief probably wouldn't risk the extra time it takes to remove a car cover, and would move on to an unprotected car."
Consumers can use car covers as part of a "layered approach" to combating theft, as recommended by the NICB. The basic rule-of-thumb is that the more layers you use to protect your vehicle, the tougher it is to steal. Other layers include warning systems, immobilizing devices, tracking mechanisms, and, of course, common sense.
Covers made from the BLOCK-IT (R) line of fabrics from Kimberly-Clark are America's best-selling brand of car cover fabrics. Breathable and rain resistant, BLOCK-IT (R) fabrics also provide enhanced protection from nicks, dings and scratches. This triple-layer, long-lasting fabric also helps prevent cracking and warping of interior vinyl and plastic components such as dashboards by blocking sun and high heat.

Brown Enterprises in Canada. Universal-fit covers are generic in shape yet designed to accommodate as many different styles of vehicles as possible. Custom-fit car covers are designed based on the vehicle's exact year, make, model and aftermarket accessories.

How do I install my car cover?
You should follow the instructions provided with your cover.  In general, you want to start on the top and work your way to either end of your vehicle,
always cover the front or back bumper last.

How do I remove my car cover?
Simply fold each side of the car cover up onto the roof and refold it as necessary so the material ends up about 2 feet wide. Then, starting at the front of the vehicle, fold the car cover towards the back in increments of about 3 feet. This way you will not drag the car cover over the vehicles surface, and it's easy to reverse the process for installation.

What is the best way to store my car cover?
Your car cover is best stored folded-up and placed in a Car Cover Storage Bag. Many drivers simply ball-up their cover in their trunk or rear cargo area. Not only does this hog space, it makes for tougher installation the next time you want to cover your car. Keeping your car cover in a Car Cover Storage Bag assures dust-free keeping. When you're ready to use it again, simply take your folded-up cover out of the bag and begin covering your vehicle. It's always best to store your car cover when completely dry, especially if you won't be using the cover for a while. Though our covers are mold and mildew resistant, storing the cover wet can cause unwanted damage. When it's stored dry in a Car Cover Storage Bag, your car cover fits compactly in your vehicle or your garage.

Can I help prevent my car cover from theft?
Yes!  we offer a lock & cable kit that will help prevent theft and help keep the cover in-place.

Does installing a cover help prevent vehicle theft?
Yes it certainly can. A thief wants to get into your vehicle, start it, and drive off as quickly as possible. As soon as a thief starts to make an entry, they are exposed. A car cover takes a few minutes to remove, so the thief's exposure time is increased. With so many cars uncovered, why would a thief want to increase the risk of being caught? A cover also helps protect the contents of a vehicle. When radios and other items are out of sight they are less likely to tempt a thief.

Can I wash my car cover?
Washing your car cover is an important part of its care. The best way to wash your cover varies between models, fabrics and styles. Always pay close attention to the included instructions that come with your car cover. They'll have details on caring for your cover, and more specific directions for washing your specific fabric and treatment. Don't be afraid to wash a car cover! Not only does a clean car cover look better, but dirt particles can compromise the effectiveness of the water-resistant material. Be sure to follow the washing instructions for your specific model, which come enclosed with your new car cover. When buying a car cover, there are several things you should keep in mind. The most important step in buying a car cover is first to decide what you expect from the car cover. For example, are you just looking to protect the car from the elements, or do you want to protect it from possible dings and dents as well? The purpose of the car cover will help you determine the level of quality you need when buying a car cover. As with any purchase, use caution when buying a car cover. You may regret purchasing an inexpensive car cover in order to save a few bucks, because these car covers often provide very little protection. For example, many cheap car covers do not provide protection from ultraviolet rays, which can cause a car’s paint to fade. Therefore, price should not be the determining factor when buying a car cover. When buying a car cover, you also need to look for one that is both water resistant and breathable. A car cover should be water resistant in order to protect the car from coming into contact with water. At the same time, water can become trapped beneath the cover. For this reason, you must look for breathable material when buying a car cover. Otherwise, water may become trapped and cause the car to rust or rot.If you are looking for extra protection when buying a car cover, you should search for one that has four or five layers of extra padding. This padding helps protect the car from objects that might accidentally fly toward the car. It also keeps the car safe from people who squeeze past the car in a crowded garage.A custom made car cover offers the ultimate in protection. This type of car cover costs more than a cover bought straight off the shelf, but it provides the best fit for the car. This makes it more effective in protecting the car from the elements. It also makes it easier to put the car cover on and to take it off.

MULTIBOND: Multibond is a light-duty version of Kimberly Clark's most popular fabric, Evolution (Technalon). Light duty means just that...it is similar in structure to Evolution, but is three layers of bonded polypropylene rather than four. It has only a two-year warranty against deterioration from ultraviolet (UV) exposure, while both of the other Kimberly-Clark fabrics (Evolution and NOAH) have four-year warranties.

Good:It rolls up much more tightly than Evolution, although not as tightly as Ultralon. It's moderately water resistant, and it is the least expensive of all the car cover fabrics. This, combined with the fairly good warranty, makes it a good value for the car cover buyer who isn't overly demanding. Bad:It is EXTREMELY light and can be difficult to handle in a breeze... especially in semi-custom versions that do not have mirror pockets. It suffers from the same response to UV deterioration that Evolution does, in that it tends to deposit itself on the car as a dust that is not easily brushed off as extended exposure to sunlight begins to break it down. In the case of Multi bond, this deterioration begins even sooner than it does with Evolution.

EVOLUTION IV (TECHNALON II)Evolution IV is the current version of this very popular fabric from Kimberly-Clark...while a bit better than III, it is basically the same material, which is a four-layer bonded polypropylene fabric. It has a much better warranty (four years) than the older version, but it's still Evolution (aka Technalon), albeit an improved version.

Good:It's very water-resistant. The current version has a 4-year manufacturer's warranty. Due to its thickness, it offers some resistance to parking lot dings. Mid-priced - lots of protection and warranty for the money. Evolution is available in three colors (tan, blue, and grey) in custom patterns.Bad: It folds up extremely large. Compressibility is miserable. It can be somewhat hard to deal with in a breeze - even a fairly mild one. The thing I like least about it is that it is not really a "fabric" at all but, rather, a hot-pressed "bonded" synthetic. As a result, it isn't particularly sturdy. For example, if you wash an Evolution cover, you're best to do it, and you MUST dry it, on the car. Needless to say, washing the cover this way makes a mess of the car, and now you have to wash it too. Don't ever put one of these covers in a dryer or you'll regret it. Its structure is not intended to survive the rigors of a clothes dryer. NEVER put Evolution in a heated dryer - it WILL melt. Although it can be machine-washed, washing machines don't really do it any favors either. Also, your exhaust will melt it if you let it touch the hot tip just after shutting the car down. But the worst thing about Evolution is that it begins to chemically break down after about one-and-a-half to two years of heavy exposure to sunlight and starts leaving a filmy residue all over the car. This isn't something you can just brush off with a California Duster either. It needs to be wet-wiped or washed off. With Evolution IV, this is the time when you use that excellent warranty. Covercraft, the largest-volume manufacturer of car covers, replaces a sun-damaged cover that is under warranty with a new one for only the cost of shipping (usually $10).

NOTE: Although it is the thickest of the various car cover fabrics, and is, therefore, often picked by owners as the one best suited to protecting their cars from cats, cats LOVE this fabric (odor?, texture?) and will tear it up mercilessly. Cat damage is NOT covered by the warranty. Never buy a cover to discourage cats from scratching your car. Find another way; car covers in general are not the solution to this problem.

NOAH:NOAH is the newest bonded polypropylene fabric from Kimberly-Clark. Originally marketed as water PROOF, it is the most water-resistant fabric available for car covers. Although the manufacturer has since backed away from the "-PROOF" statement, it's still better at keeping out water than anything else out there...apparently even Ultralon.

Good:Very, very water-resistant. Despite this water-resistance, NOAH still breathes a bit better than Ultralon. Usually, NOAH can be found at prices that are slightly less than Ultralon. Four-year manufacturer's warranty. Thinner than Evolution and, consequently, rolls up smaller, but not as small as Ultralon. Bad: Like Multibond, NOAH is pretty light and can be difficult to handle in the wind. Being a bonded fabric, it is not as sturdy as woven fabrics, and should be handled and washed carefully. Although the fabric is new enough on the market that no empirical longevity information is yet available, it's probably reasonable to assume that NOAH's response to ultraviolet exposure will be similar to Evolution's.

POLY-COTTON (and the flannel-lined variant called TAN FLANNEL):

A blend of cotton and polyester, either lined or unlined, that is best suited to indoor storage of vehicles. Owners of restored show cars often pick the flannel-lined version, as it is very soft against the surface of the car. NEVER buy tan flannel cover for a convertible with a canvas top. The flannel will leave itself all over the canvas and you WON'T like the work involved to remove it. Tan flannel works well with vinyl convertible tops, however.

Good:It's heavy enough that it is relatively easy for one person to get on and off without dragging it in the dirt, even in a fairly stiff breeze. It folds up smaller than Evolution, but not all that small, especially if flannel-lined. The lined ones are VERY gentle on the car. It is a true fabric and, consequently, may outlast Evolution covers (at least mine have) despite the underwhelming warranty coverage (1 year, prorated). Also, because it's a fabric, it can be machine washed and dried without being destroyed.

Bad:It isn't even a little bit water resistant. Although it rolls up fairly small, it's much less compressible than Ultralon. Being a fairly open cotton weave, it accumulates dust and then lets it through to some extent, and the flannel lining will flock a bit on the car, causing you to have to CA dust the car every time you take it off after you've used it for a while, providing you're as picky as I am. At least this is just dust that comes off easily with CA dusting, unlike the residue that Evolution leaves behind when it gets older.

ULTRALON: Ultralon has had some water repellency problems and is becoming less and less available as a result. Some vendors, Covercraft among them, are not offering it at all anymore. They are now offering a new fabric, WeatherShield, instead.

SUNBRELLA: Sunbrella is the king, the absolute top-end, of car cover fabrics. An acrylic canvas similar to the fabric used for boat and sail covers, but softer for vehicle applications, Sunbrella is about as impervious to ultraviolet damage as a fabric can be. Featuring a five-year factory warranty against sun deterioration, it lasts more like eight to ten years in actual application.

Good:Extremely sturdy, long-lived, and easy to handle in a wind. Opaque to sun and will not pass dust, even thoughit's a woven fabric. Comes treated for water-resistance, and can be re-treated during the life of the fabric. Virtually indestructible in the face of the elements. Excellent warranty; even better real-life longevity. Even easier to handle in the wind than poly-cotton. Available in six colors.

Bad: EXPENSIVE - approximately twice the cost of Evolution (doesn't look as expensive when the initial cost is amortized over the life of the cover, however). Relatively heavy; could be considered hard to handle due to its weight by small users.

Don't take the risk..   Kimberly-Clark, our longtime fabric technology partner, recently completed weather testing some of the "bargain priced"
non-woven type car covers currently available in the market...the results were shocking!

Kimberly-Clark pioneered the technology used to construct non-woven fabrics.  Polypropylene (and other) fibers are extruded and then bonded together using special laminates and/or heat and pressure.  Depending on the application, the fibers may be bi-component (using two different performance synthetics) and/or multi-layered for dust, ding or moisture control.

For the fabrics K-C developed for car cover use, one of the key requirements is the fabric's ability to stand up to UV degradation.  You are buying a cover to protect BOTH the exterior and interior of the vehicle and, if the cover won't hold up to the daily onslaught of UV rays, you've wasted money and can end up damaging the car you wanted to protect.

K-C's development scientists constantly monitor fabric performance of their own, and competitors', fabrics using "real-life" fence tests where fabrics are affixed to panels and left outside 24/7 in the Florida sun.  This is done in addition to weatherometer testing conducted in controlled lab conditions.  Both fabric tests rely on control samples for comparing results and performance evaluations, which are usually reviewed on a quarterly basis.

Shown above are test results of two "bargain priced" non-woven covers - in only 3 months the UV rays had burned through the outer layer and were cooking the inner layer(s) which will result in minimal life for these covers.  In each fabric picture shown above, the fabric to the right of the black divider line is the original (control) fabric and the fabric on the left side shows the results of UV degradation.  Not only was the outer layer of the fabric almost burned away by the sun, the tensile strength was reduced by an average of 80%.

One of the most expensive components in non-woven fabric construction is the use of UV inhibitors.  All Kimberly-Clark fabrics are U.S. made and include a mandatory amount of inhibitors to assure optimum fabric performance.  Depending on fabric construction, K-C covers carry a warranty to the original purchaser of up to 4 years.  For a cover to last, the fabric has to be built right from the start !!

Quality Components = Quality Covers...don't take the risk with inferior grades of fabrics when it comes to protecting your vehicle.
